I can't believe I made it into my maternity leave! I secretly thought that I was going to be at work while the whole thing started! But today and yesterday have been so nice so far. On Sunday, Stephen and I went in to the doctor to see if I had progressed at all since the last time I went in (2cm dilated and 70% effaced) and I hadn't really, so we went to see an Austin Toros basketball game. They are a developmental team for the San Antonio Spurs that play in Cedar Park, Tx- maybe 20 minutes from where I work. I had bought a pack of free/discounted tickets around Christmas, and Stephen had sort of been unconvinced about the whole thing, but the stadium was very nice and the Toros were very good! Towards the end, he started joking that they HAD to get to 100 points or he wouldn't be satisfied, and the game ended at 103/92 in the last minute with the Totos winning! It was a lot of fun and we both had a great time.
After the game, I was fortunate enough to be given some baby clothes from a military family that I had met when they visited my work. They had come in at least twice since I have been working there, and had seen my progress when they stopped in a week or two ago. After we got to talking, we found that they live only 10 minutes away from Stephen and I, and that they were looking to get rid of their smaller size clothes! They have two little girls of their own, and their youngest is just getting into size 12-18 baby clothes. I went to pick them up and they were just so sweet and told me to keep in contact so they could pass more things along as their family grew out of them. The generosity of military families always amazes me. (This is not the only family that have contributed to our supply of baby items! The Cosme family, who Stephen knows through work also gave us a bunch of clothes, shoes, and young baby play items.) We live a lifestyle that not everyone can understand, and I have been lucky enough to fine some of my greatest friends and most kind acquaintances though our shared experiences. My fellow military wives have done everything from helping Stephen and I with Violet while we travel, to becoming great friends who I can get great advice from, and now making it so I am set with clothes for our baby girl for some time at least. I know that there are military wives who have not been as lucky as I, but I have never been involved in any drama and have only had absolutely wonderful experiences. It's tough to be away from family, especially while I prepare to have a baby, but the openness of my peers and opportunities to travel and have so many great experiences while being a military wife are amazing to me. I have been able to travel to many places I probably would not otherwise, as well as meet so many (military and non-military) amazing people I never would have.
Today Stephen had to go to work, of course, so I decided to dedicate the day to a combination of relaxing and getting things done. But the wonderful thing is that I don't just have two days this week to get everything done like I do normally. I took Violet for a nice walk and then to the dog park (we both need to get our exercise), and then got a bit of cleaning done. I've decided to clean a couple rooms per day really well, so the house will be very clean by the time Sophia is ready to come home, and I don't have to exert myself too much. And afterwards, I took a nap! It was so nice.
I'm so glad that these final days of my pregnancy have been so pleasant. Sophia will come into the world with a relaxed, happy mama! And I can't wait for our families to visit in just a few weeks! So much love is going to welcome our little girl into the world.
